I thought Mom would be there with a bag of frozen peas when I walked into our house. She knew what to do. I promised myself that it would be my last fight at Round Valley Middle School. Every closet, classroom, and lost pair of sweatpants would be 200 feet underwater by Monday.

Mom wasn't there, though. It was quiet in the house.

"Mom?" I told you. It was noon, which was three hours before I usually got home. Most of the time, Dad was in his office on a work call, and Mom was in the kitchen working on her next strange project. For the past few weeks, she had been canning carrots.

I saw a note on the bar as I walked toward the kitchen.
