My daughter’s TikTok is F*cked Up.
Parents who were worried about my daughter Chalene's TikTok videos started sending me messages about a week ago. The parents were clearly very angry and told her that their own kids had hurt themselves or almost died by acting like her. It was both shock and confusion that made me click on the links to her account, and I really wish I hadn't.
I gasped in horror as I saw Chalene, who was covered in makeup and wearing a dress that showed too much, do "challenges" that other girls her age (and younger, it seemed) were copying. With cherry red lipstick covering her teeth, she'd smile and bop to a famous song while following the trends she seemed to be starting.
The first one made my blood run cold. Chalene bobbed her head back and forth in a way that was too dramatic while she plugged in a phone charger. As I watched her keep filming herself from what looked like a bathroom, my heart raced. I realised that the camera was recording from inside the water of a bathtub when the picture of her face suddenly became wavy and moved around. The phrase #liquidselfie was written at the bottom of the picture.
It made my heart race as I clicked on other links that were sent to me, as if I were somehow to blame. The next one was very scary. Chalene did a kind of sultry dance in a crop top before setting the phone down on a surface. After dancing away from the camera, she showed off a short skirt and sheer tights.
