I'm scared of my wife.

When I met my wife in high school, it was love at first sight. Ten years later, we were still together, just as crazy about each other as we were in high school. Things were great for her and her life.

A habit began to form over the years, though, and I desperately tried to break out of it by going through phases that were very different from one another. Still, they always made her laugh, and she looks forward to the next one. I tried to be vegan last month, but after two weeks, she caught me eating a pepperoni pizza (with extra pepperoni). This week, after watching a lot of videos about it, I chose to only use natural products in my daily life.

I bought a new hair brush with boar bristles, a new tooth brush made of coal, a new perfume (a musk), and everything that went with them to meet my new goal. But I chose not to tell her about my new goal for the first time. In fact, I wanted her to tell me on her own that I looked better, had cleaner teeth, better breath, and softer hair.

I put everything in the bathroom cabinet that wasn't being used. For the trick to work, I put fake blonde hair on my brush (which you can easily get at the store) and wet my old, unused toothbrush every day.

Things were fine for a few days, but then I began to notice some odd things about my wife. Because her face looked pale and wrinkled, she wasn't as pretty as normal. I thought she might be tired, so I did more housework to help her. I heard that her steps were heavier, like she wasn't walking but dragging her feet on the floor instead. This was different from her normal cute fairy-like walk.

That was then last night.

I could usually sleep through anything. There could have been a war going on under our bedroom window and I wouldn't have heard it. It never bothered me because my wife slept so lightly and could wake me up if something happened (which it never did).

Unfortunately, that night I woke up to heavy whispers. She was talking to me next to me and saying things I couldn't understand, which scared me. I looked at the clock and saw that it was 3:30 am. I hadn't woken up that early since I got married. I thought that she might be a sleep talker, which I might not have noticed because I slept so much.

When I turned to look at her, I stopped and almost went to the bathroom.

Putting her back to me, she stood on the floor next to her bed. She was shorter, her back was crooked, and her long fingers were covered in a red substance as she kept chanting her words over and over. Her head was bald, not shaved, but bald like she had never had hair on it.

After that, she stopped.

Her head slowly turned up 45 degrees, then 90 degrees, until it was facing me but her body wasn't. This went on for what seemed like hours. I was scared, and she looked confused. I couldn't tell whose voice it was because her mouth was open and it sounded like three people were talking from her at the same time.

"Go to sleep again."

I did what she said and went back to where I was before. I didn't have any other ideas or solutions, so I did what I did. I even made a fake breathing sound while pee dropped on the bed and my back broke out in a sweat because I could feel her eyes on me. After a few seconds, she started singing again, but I still couldn't calm down. The time kept going until 4:10, when she stopped what she was doing and went back to sleep.

Like I always do every morning, I pretended everything was fine, kissed her, and told her I loved her. I saw that she didn't have any teeth in her mouth when she smiled and laughed.

In the evening, I watched from behind the open door she had left and saw her walk into our bathroom, grab my hairbrush, and frown. I saw her take a piece of fake hair that I had left on it and put it in her mouth. I saw her frown get worse as I watched.

When she looked toward the door and caught my eyes, my knees gave way. As she walked up to me with a smile on her crooked face and bloodshot eyes, I had to take a step back. She grabbed my arm quickly and stomped on it with her nails until blood came out.

"Who are you?"

"You had to break out of the spell before our wedding anniversary," she said with a laugh.

I tried to get away, but I couldn't because my whole body was stuck to the floor. I watched as she put her mouth on my arms and sucked the blood out of them. The feeling of her wet, toothless mouth on them made me feel gross.

"Little one, don't worry—everything will be fine soon."

I yelled in pain as she grabbed a handful of my hair and pulled it out. Since she had everything she needed, she went back to the bathroom and shut the door.

I chose to run away, so I ran as fast as I could to the door. When I heard noise behind me, I turned around and saw someone standing there. I should not have. She was running after me on all fours, with her head between her legs and her body bent backwards so much that it looked like it was almost folded in half. I tried to open the door by grabbing the handle, but it wouldn't move. I started crying so hard that snot ran down my face.

"Honey, stop being so silly." She was amused.

Dinner was served, and now we're both sitting at the table acting like I'm working on a last-minute project. I'm writing to you because I can't get out of this house. I've broken windows and crawled into vents, but nothing has worked. She's telling me to drink more wine while smiling at me across the table.

She is beginning to look lovely again.
